We received a birthday party request from the small X-Wing fighter at the Zoo Boo. Here is the note from his mother:

My son will be having a Lego Star Wars 4th Birthday party. He is a huge fan. I think he knows more Star Wars characters than his ABCs. (Ahh, what a proud Mom) He would just be in awe if anyone showed, even if it was a short time for photos on your way to another event. Thank you, I know its short notice.
Referred by: My son saw many of you at Zoo Boo (he was the little x-wing fighter) and went crazy!!

The party is in Shokopee from 2-4om and about 15 kids are invited.
Please post if you have an interest in doing a birthday party and if you are available to participate in this one.

OK, it looks like we have two people for sure. Here is the current info:

The mom would like us to join the party around 3:30, towards the end.

Brian, you will be the "star" of this event, since the mom would like you to train the birthday boy to be a Jedi. She has prepared a certificate to award him. So you can "ham it up" a bit and then give him the award.

Matt, I am not sure what other costumes you have, but the mom asked that the Tuskan not attend, since she thinks the Tuskan might scare some of the kids. If you still have the TIE pilot, that might be the best since it isn't as complicated to dress, and the boy has an X-Wing pilot costume. Let me know, especially if you need a changing area at the boy's house.

Of course there will also be pictures and the chance to participate in some of the games, depending on how things go. Also the mom has a Lego present she wants us to give her son.

She will make a contribution to charity on our participation.

Lindsey, any word on whether or not you could make this?
Also if anyone has any suggestions on something I could put the birthday boy through to become a Jedi, I'm all ears!
My only thought is to somehow make him craft his own lightsaber...no idea how that would work, but that's all I got.

The Jedi training Academy skit that they do at Disneyworld is pretty simple and quick. Basically they gave the kids they called up each a toy saber and a robe, then had them go through a few drills with the saber, much like our duel sets, but simpler. I think it was 1. strike at left shoulder, 2. strike at right shoulder, 3. strike at left knee, 4. duck down, 5. strike at right knee, 6. overhead strike. Then vader came out and went through the drill with each kid ( they were verbally coached through it). Vader blocked each strike. The whole thing took about 20 minutes for 7 or 8 kids. After the last one "defeted" Vader, he said something epic and stormed away. Then the kids were declared official padawans. Maybe a simple certificate could be made up.

Did I hear they don't want 'scary' people there? No Sith?

well, the lady specifically said no tusken, but her reasoning was that she thought it would scare the kids.
I know that if we represent Lucas Film we are not suppose to do the Jedi training thing, due to liability with the kids.
As for the certificate, my understanding is that the mom has something for us to give. So...I dunno, it would probably be easy enough to just play a little bit with the sabers, then say, you're official...but looking for ideas, so if there's more jump on in!

To clarify, my original note to the mom indicated that we had three characters who had volunteered: Princess Leia (Teresa), a Jedi/Han (Brian), and a Tuskan/clone/TIE fighter (Matt). She then said "no Tuskan, that would be too scary for the kids." She liked the idea of a Jedi, which gave her the idea to make up a certificate for her son. I think the "training" thing can be very low key. The "balloon saber" idea might be cool, since there is less likelihood of mischief. (These are young boys, you know!)

yeah, for those of you not in the know, Jim Austerman over on the 501st central garrison boards mentioned they could all construct their own "lightsaber" by using some construction paper, tape and the long thin balloons. Docrate the construction paper however you wish, roll it up around the balloon, tape it up and thar be shiny new lightsabers!
I do like that idea, but since it looks like we're basically the last half-hour of the party and she created a certificate just for the birthday boy, probably just do what Steve suggested, a couple parry's, strikes, and there yah go kid, may the force be with you!

Actually, she would probably be amenable to starting earlier if you want to to this "cut and paste" exercise with the kids. Since I didn't want to commit you do doing anything in particular, she suggested 3:30. In fact, you can now probably call her directly to discuss this, since I think I gave you her phone number in the PM I sent.

sorry I am so late getting back to this thread... Unfortunately the Tusken is the only wearable costume I have at this point. I sold the TIE last year, the clone is still waiting to be fixed up and the Darth Nihilus still needs fabric.... sorry dudes.

Brian, I guess this makes it a solo deal for you. If you decide to bail, let me know ASAP, because the mom is expecting folks to show up and if we are going to back out, we need to let her know.

Whew! Thanks, Brian. Once you line up the final number (four might be a bit overwhelming), and decide how much "crafting" you want to attempt (like balloon sabers or whatnot) you should probably just go ahead and contact the mom directly to lock down the time to arrive. You can actually arrive earlier than 3:30 if there will be more interaction during the party. She is pretty flexible (and EXCITED!).

Since most of the costumes are "drivable" you probably won't need a changing room prior to your entrance.
