I just saw this and keep wondering if I'm trapped in a horrible nightmare. Karen Traviss will not be writing any new Star Wars novels after Imperial
Commando 2! Hopefully her last will be her best. Karen Traviss, you will be missed...

Darman, your link doesn't work. Here's the link to Karen's blog entry:

That's too bad. I thought there were some continuity gurus at Lucasfilm who tried to keep things smooth on the front end of projects to avoid this. I hope
she is able to create a ending that doesn't feel like everyone was left completely hanging.
Does anyone have any idea what kinds of discontinuity the Clone Wars will create, that would bring what she wrote into question?

This quote from the blog concerned me..."Rather than switch to vastly altered storylines in which many of the characters whose lives you've been
following for the last five years wouldn't exist"...Is Lucas altering the whole Clone/Mando connection? Are they altering the whole Mando
backstory? We know the Mandalore is in the second season of CW.
I'll have to check on the Visual Guide she talks about to see what exactly caused all the fuss in the first place.

Okay, from what I can gather, the main point of contention has to do with planet Mandalore and the Mandalorians, which will play a heavy role in CW season 2.
I just find the whole thing a bit odd...hasn't Karen re-written continuity established by several other authors herself? Now the first time something she writes gets overwritten, she up and quits? She seems to be letting her ego get in the way of herself. She mentions in this blog that you can't let yourself get emotionally attached to a licensed product, but it seems to me that's exactly what she is doing. Just seems odd. On the other hand, Lucas and his empire need to be careful about what they are doing. They could in fact end up alienating potential authors over the fact that they are so brash about simply overwriting something that an author has spend a lot of time and care writing. By doing this, Lucas is undermining the worth of the books he is putting out. Whats the incentive for me to buy a book and invest my time and emotions into it if it is simply going to be erased a couple years down the line?? |

Well she had several plot points of hers overridden, ie having the 501st around at the start of the Clone Wars rather than at the end, Venator-class Star
Destroyers were introduced at the start of the war rather than having them show up with no one knowing what they were at the Battle of Coruscant, the new
clones poor marksmenship, and I haven't seen an ounce of a connection between the clones and the mandalorians (aside from their armour).

If the rumors I am hearing/reading are true, the CW 'toon version of planet Mandalore and the Mandalorians is going to be a large and very odd departure
from what has been established thus far.

The bigger point is this. Doesn't LFL have quite a bit of say in the storylines in the first place? Why does this even come up if the authors have to get
everything cleared before they publish anyway. Wouldn't it be easier to say "don't write this about that" on the front end? I realize that
things change over time, but it seems like it would be better for the franchise to keep the continuity. Otherwise, why have anything go through the LFL
screening at all.
And yes, she did re-invent much of the Mandalorian history from the comics series, and then ret-conned most of it.

Here it is. Planet Mandalore, a desert plant with only one inhabitable city (not Keldabe) that resides inside a bunch of cubes:

From a bsuiness point of view, I get it on her part. Anyways, making changing Mandalore like this made about as much sense as the changes made to the major
battles in The Two Towers. The point is, why? Maybe the reasons for the Mando changes will be made clear in the show, but the changing of the LOTR flick
didn't really add or subtract form the story. It just changed it. Why? Why not embellish somethign that's already been established and make it a
richer environment.
So many movies now make wholesale changes for the sake of changing. Transformers, for example. I know that in real life, change is inevitable, but there should be a good reason. I've been impressed with how closely the Narnia and Harry Potter stories have stuck to the books so far. Granted, they have been trimmed up, but the plots haven't changed. I hope they can keep those series true.

why is it that lucas and his staff give green lights to authors on material, then when someone else comes along(clone wars artist 'hey i think mandalore
should look like this')with another thought, they green light that. when it completely is against previous material. they should try living with the
stories they've given the o.k. to. I understand there's a lot of material out there to keep track of. but come on, you paint the planet like this and
then it's cartoon time and now it's completely different for probably no good reason other than it looks different or cool. it's like the books
are a joke.

While there wasn't much under the Mandalore listing in the atlas, a reading of the Mandalorian Wars proved interesting. "the Death Watch sought to
destroy Duchess Satine, the enigmatic New Mandalorian leader. Satine survived their attacks to become a passionate advocate for neutrality in the Clone Wars,
but the Death Watch's time would come. The clone Alpha-02, also known as Spar, eventually won out over Satine's faction and dubbed himself Mandalore
the Resurrector, a title indicating that the old traditions once more held sway."
So...Obi-Wan's girlfriend is a Mando. Even in this entry, the authors are working at making fixes to any continuity issues --- Spar is from older continuity, Satine is new. |

It's a kid's cartoon. They are first and foremost concerned with the ratings on a kid's show. That's why they can/will trod upon the
authors' work.
