The picnic is set and the date is Saturday August 29th 12:00-3:00 PM taking place at Lake Calhoun. There will be many attendees, lots of kids of all ages and they are expecting media coverage and a lot of support through sponsorships and participants, so this would be a great venue for us to troop and be seen. Plus there will be games and other fun stuff
If you have access to the 501st Central Garrison Boards, Please there if you are interested. If not, please post here. If we can get enough people to commit then I can get back to them and they can let folks know we'll be there and we will be mentioned in future planning announcements.
Thanks for your support!
Update 7-23-09:
I asked several questions of my contact at BBBS regarding the event. Here is the e-mail she sent to me:

| Hi Jim - I took a look at the pictures of you guys and your costumes are really amazing. We would love to have your group participate
in our event!
I have answered all of your questions below. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about any of this and I will see what I can do. We really appreciate you guys for being willing to do this!! 1. What is the location of the event and where do we go? -The event is going to be held at Lake Calhoun near the volleyball courts (right by Thomas Beach). You will see a "roped" off area with a ton of carnival games, kids, BBBS balloons, etc. I can also give you my cell phone number as the date gets closer so you can contact me if you have a problem finding us. 2. Where do we park? -You may be able to park in the Thomas Beach lot but as the lot is so small, you will likely be parallel parking on the street across from the event. 3. Who is our contact? -As of now, I will be your primary contact. 4. Can you provide a secure changing area for us to get in and out of costume? -Since the picnic will be located in the middle of a park, it is unlikely that we will be able to provide a secure changing area. We had looked into getting a pop up tent with "walls," but they are very expensive and our budget won't allow it. The closest thing to in the area is the row of port-a-potties near the beach. However, there are public bathrooms near the boating and recreation area across the lake that you may be able to use. 5. Can we secure our belongings in this area? -There will be a registration table at the event that will be staffed. You may be able to leave your belongings there, but I don't know that it would be entirely secure. I'm hoping that because I will be in the area pretty early in the day, my car will be in very close proximity to the event, so if necessary, you could store some belongings in my car. 6. Will water/drinks be available? -YES! We should have enough pop and water available for you. 7. Will food be available? -There will be food at the event but unfortunately, we only received enough for the matches in attendance. We are still trying to get some donations to be able to provide food for volunteers but unless you hear otherwise, assume that there will not be any food available. 8. What hours do you want us there? -The picnic is from 12-3. We would love to have you all for as long as you would be willing to stay. The kids will go CRAZY for you guys (and some of the Bigs and staff probably will, too). |
Thoughts?
