I loved Traitor. Thought it was genius the way it delved into the Vong and the beginings of Caedus. My faves are the Thrawn Trilogy, Order 66, and Thr Force
Unleashed.

I think my overall favorite has to be Outbound Flight. Aside from Zahn forcing Anakin and Obi-Wan into the story, I thought it was a brilliant
exploration of what what was essentially a throw away line from the Heir to the Empire.
Not until this book did he fully explore the sophisitcated cunning and ruthlessness that Thrawn was capable of. He was able to play everyone for fools and get the exact outcome he planned on. The Thrawn/Pealleon and Thrawn/Car'daas relationships always remind me of Holmes and Watson stories, of which I am also a big fan.

I think I was under the impression that Zahn had to include Anakin and Obi-Wan into the story. I think the editors/powers that be felt that in order for the
book to sell, it had to have main movie characters included. Although I have been known to be mistaken...from time to time.

I'd like to second Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter. Depressing, but brilliant.

It's hard to pick just one. I loved NJO as a whole. I think Star By Star and Traitor are my favorites from that series.

If I had to pick just one, it'd have to be Vision of the Future. Everyone gets to do cool stuff, characterization is spot on, it brings the New Republic era to a satisfying conclusion, Luke and Mara get together, and we get chilling hints of something Truly Horrifying out beyond known space. (I'd really love to see Zahn given permission to do an Infinities trilogy based on how he would have taken things post-Hand of Thrawn--and I say this as a fan of the NJO.) |
